Project Title: Health Squad
With the help of the Bristol Flyers Health Squad over 1,500 children from 11 deprived primary schools have made an ‘advanced step’ in tackling risk of heart disease in Bristol.
Through interactive basketball coaching sessions and simple messaging like making sugar swaps and using traffic light labelling, 98% of pupils taking part now feel more confident about how the heart works and how to look after their hearts for life.
Uniquely, this six week programme was supported by local professional basketball players. One player on the Health Squad was homeless on the streets of Skid Row at 10 years old and later went on to represent England in the Commonwealth Games. Role models like him have inspired children to take up team sports and other types of physical activity, regardless of their previous feelings towards PE. Children have even taken these messages home to their families along with free match day tickets.
As a result of this funding more children and families are eating better, moving more and feeling inspired to be the best they can be.
