Heart Research UK Midlands

This is custom heading (h3 - heading 3)

We have a wonderfully dedicated team based in Birmingham.
Since 2007 they have been supported by a great volunteer base and have worked hand in hand with Midlands based corporate partners, groups and individuals who all want to raise money that is spent locally. With this support Heart Research UK has funded many community and research projects within the Midlands.

John Lloyd Midlands Regional Executive

I feel fortunate that I was given the opportunity to work for a charity that has achieved so much over 5 decades. During the last 11 years working as the Midlands Regional Executive, I have relished building long standing relationships and achieving goals that bring opportunities to help those less fortunate than ourselves

I believe that a hands on approach and working together has been paramount in the success of what the charity has achieved in the region. The local community and businesses have embraced what we are continuing to do in our region, which is reflected in their help, support, and overwhelming generosity. This is not a 9 till 5 job by any means, it needs passion, commitment, hard work which in the end produces lasting results for all concerned.

Joanne Madden Midlands Admin & Events

After 12 years of travelling and working abroad, I returned to my home city of Birmingham keen to pursue an interest in working in the charity sector. I first joined the Midlands team as a volunteer in 2012 before progressing to a permanent member of staff. I continue to enjoy every minute of the work I do and am very proud to be part of Heart Research UK’s achievements in the Midlands region. It’s not just the wonderful projects that have been funded here but also the relationships built and the support received from individuals and local businesses in the area.

The passion and generosity from the local community is always an inspiration and it’s a pleasure to be able to work alongside them, fundraising for pioneering medical research, ground-breaking training and education to improve heart health.

Jack Lloyd Apprentice

I first started as a volunteer with Heart Research UK 6 years ago at the young age of 14. Attending and helping to organise charity events I was able to gain both valuable experience and skills in fundraising. With these skills I was able to become HRUK in the midlands’ first ever apprentice. Really caring about the projects the money is raised for is why my volunteer work was so important to me. I’m excited to be able to contribute more to Heart Research UK and the worthwhile causes the charity funds as I progress with my apprenticeship and being able to help make a difference in our local community.

Hospitals, universities, schools and local community groups have benefited from our work which has changed the lives of many suffering from heart disease. These projects include:

Heart in a Box
£265,000

A revolutionary organ care system which enables hearts to be transported from the donor to the patient while still being supplied with oxygen rich blood. This means that more hearts will still be viable when they reach the patient for a heart transplant.

Active Albion
£9,800

A programme aimed at Key Stage 2 Children in Sandwell and Dudley which provided ‘Keep Fit’ sessions using sport and physical activity as a vehicle for learning about the need for a healthy heart. The project culminated in a festival at West Bromwich Albion football club where outstanding performers earned a medal. Everyone was invited to take part in active workshops and were then able to watch the football game.

A technique to benefit patients with advanced heart failure
£144,148

This project will demonstrate whether a technique called ‘wave intensity analysis’ (WIA) can be used to assess the function of the right side of the heart. WIA may benefit patients with a range of heart diseases and be particularly useful in selecting those suitable for a mechanical heart pump, or for diagnosing and treating right heart failure.
