Helping hearts at work
Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer, but adopting good lifestyle habits can reduce your chances of developing it while helping you to live a healthier, happier and longer life. That includes introducing steps to keep your heart healthy at work.
Did you know that the average full-time worker:
- Spends 1,800 hours at work each year?
- Spends around 10 hours a day sitting?
- Regularly works through lunch?
Excessive sitting is associated with lower energy expenditure and poor glucose control, putting workers at an increased risk of weight gain and type 2 diabetes, even in those who are active outside of work. Regularly working through lunch and poor food choices impacts on staff mental health and can lead to afternoon slumps in mood and productivity. So it's just as important to look after hearts in the workplace as it is in the home - which is why we need you to help hearts by becoming a healthy heart employer.
A healthy heart employer
Looking after the health of your workforce is an investment that will bring substantial benefits, including:
- Reduced sickness and absenteeism
- Long-term illness prevention
- Increased productivity
- The creation of team building opportunities
- Enhanced employee engagement, motivation and morale
- Improved company profile and reputation.
We can support you to become a healthy heart employer by helping you to develop appropriate workplace health initiatives; by delivering lifestyle health checks, personalised lifestyle reports and advice to individual employees; delivering heart health and lifestyle workshops, leaflets, posters and other resources to your workforce. We can also support you to work towards achieving our Healthy Heart Mark employer award.
The Healthy Heart Mark employer award
This simple and cost-effective programme is for organisations that value their workforce and are committed to making a positive contribution towards employee health and wellbeing. Heart Research UK has worked with a number of organisations, from different industries and ranging in size from a micro-business to multi-national organisations to deliver the Healthy Heart Mark scheme.
At the start of the programme, our Lifestyle team will work with you to develop a programme of healthy heart activities tailored to your specific business needs. This will include providing your employees with confidential one-to-one healthy heart lifestyle checks; practical advice to help individual employees to improve their lifestyle and reduce their risk of heart disease. Next we will deliver a programme that will educate and encourage employees to eat more healthily, increase their physical activity, manage and reduce any stress. Additionally we can provide advice and support to employees who are looking to quit smoking. We can also provide employers with a company health profile. This will enable you to measure the overall health of your workforce and track the overall progress made year on year.
Bronze, silver and gold awards are given (in the form of certificates and chartermark that you can use in your communications). On reaching the gold award, you will also be presented with a prestigious Healthy Heart Mark employer award and presented with an engraved plaque to showcase your achievement.
How much does it cost?
We only charge for the consultant's time to carry out the employee health checks. Costs are based on a minimum of 50% of the workforce taking up health checks, but additional days can be booked if required. Our lifestyle consultants can each see around 20 people per day.
