Masterclass 2018 – Keele
Surgery for Acute Aortic Dissection
In November 2018, we held our fifth annual aortic surgery masterclass. In a change from previous years, the course was held at the Keele Anatomy and Surgical Training Centre (KASTC) at Keele University, which has superb training facilities.
The course director, Miss Deborah Harrington, is part of a team of consultant cardiac surgeons at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital which is recognised as one of the leading centres in aortic surgery in the UK. The faculty included talented and experienced consultant cardiac surgeons from Northern General Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Royal Papworth Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
This course provided a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience of aortic dissection scenarios including total aortic arch replacement, closely supervised by the expert faculty. It benefited 16 recently-appointed consultant cardiac surgeons and senior trainees in cardiac surgery from across the UK.
We hope that the new surgical skills learned from the experienced and highly reputable faculty will help to improve the standard of care for aortic patients across the country.
We would like to thank our Aortic Dissection Support Group for helping to fund this Masterclass.
This course was accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
So far, 70 surgeons from hospitals across the UK have received training at our aortic surgery masterclasses. Patients across the country will benefit as more surgeons have the expertise to carry out these life-saving operations.
