Helping Hearts near you for 48 years
We're a national charity that has been helping hearts since 1967 when heart surgeon, Mr David Watson MBE, realised that patients were dying unnecessarily because of the lack of research into heart disease, especially surgical techniques. More personally, he was tired of telling heart patients that there was little he could do to help them and wanted to do more.
Recently, we've expanded our activities to focus on children, including research into and providing rehabilitation for children leaving hospital after heart surgery or with a life-long condition, and a project for research into using monitors for babies leaving Birmingham Children's Hospital, giving those who look after them peace of mind at home.
Clinicians have also benefitted from our Masterclasses, unique courses with world-renowned experts who pass on their skills and expertise to young doctors, nurses and other health professionals.
Heart disease is still Britain's biggest killer with nearly 80,000 deaths a year, so our work is also trying to prevent people getting the illness in the first place, with a range of activities to ensure that people in communities around the UK live healthier, happier and longer lives. We've given £1.2m in the last 10 years to community-based Healthy Heart projects to encourage people to improve their lifestyle habits.
We're your local national heart charity, with everything raised locally helping hearts near you.
