We’re taking on Scotland’s biggest killer

15 April, 2019

On average, 41 people a day die from cardiovascular disease in Scotland. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons and daughters, from Aberdeen to Arbroath, from Kirkcaldy to Kilbride. There will be 41 today and another 41 tomorrow.

We know that in Scotland the death rate from coronary heart disease is almost 50% higher than for the South East of England.

We’ve launched the Heart of Scotland Appeal to change this.

Heart of Scotland is a fundraising appeal to raise and spend money in Scotland on vital medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. It’s a way for each of us to honour, celebrate and share the stories of our hearts and to raise funds for the life changing breakthroughs of tomorrow.

The appeal is centred on four striking badges and an exclusive t-shirt, kindly designed by internationally acclaimed Scottish fashion designer Christopher Kane.

Which badge will you choose? When Carmel is asked about her Heart of Scotland badge, it is easy to explain her choice. She talks about her mum and her uncle who have had quadruple heart bypass surgery. She shares the story of her niece who was born with heart defect that was corrected during her first fragile year of life.

Her mum, her uncle and her niece are all alive today thanks to breakthroughs in the treatment of heart disease. This why Carmel ran a marathon to raise funds for heart research. This is why Carmel wears the Life heart.

The Heart of Scotland Appeal has already seen tremendous support from a whole host of celebrities and famous faces, such as Bill Paterson, Mark Bonnar, Amy Macdonald, KT Tunstall, David Moyes and many more.

Check out their reasons for supporting the campaign in the video below.
