Project title: Plymouth HeartStrong

Region: Plymouth, Devon

Award amount: £14,180

Date: October 2024 – September 2025

This Healthy Heart Grant project has now finished, read on for the project highlights.

The Problem

In Plymouth cardiovascular disease rates are notably higher than the national average, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. Adults in deprived areas are 30% more likely to suffer from heart disease compared to those in more affluent areas. Low-income households in Plymouth often have limited access to healthy food options, recreational facilities, and healthcare services, all of which are crucial for maintaining heart health.

The need for this Healthy Heart Grant was highlighted through health surveys and focus group discussions which emphasised the need for ongoing support in adopting and maintaining heart healthy lifestyles in under resourced communities.

The Project

Plymouth HeartStrong was tailored to improve cardiovascular health for 50 adults aged 40-65 years from low-income backgrounds in Plymouth over a 40-week period. The project directly addressed heart health by implementing structured exercise sessions, nutrition workshops and regular health screenings. Participants engaged in weekly group activities such as walking clubs, aerobics and strength training, which are proven to improve cardiovascular health. Educational sessions focussed on heart-healthy diets, demonstrations and stress management techniques. Participants also had access to individual consultations and peer support groups.

Project Highlights

This project had 52 beneficiaries who completed the project from start to end, implementing behaviour change in a large section of the local community. Many beneficiaries saw improvements in blood pressure, weight and BMI throughout the duration of the project. Those who began the project with high blood pressure were advised to consult their GP, leading to closer monitoring and, in some cases, new medications. In post-programme surveys, 78% of participants felt more confident preparing healthy meals on a budget, 85% reported being more physically active in daily life, and 72% said they experienced less stress and improved wellbeing. Plymouth HeartStrong demonstrated a practical, community-based model for tackling health inequalities and improving heart health.

“I feel healthier, I understand what to eat, and I know how important it is to keep moving. I want to keep this up long after the project finishes.”
