Research Grant

Translational Research Projects (TRP) Grants

Translational Research Project grants bridge the gap between discovery research and patient benefit.

Scope

We fund research focused solely on heart diseases and proposals must clearly demonstrate potential benefits for heart disease patients. Projects targeting conditions like stroke, diabetes, or peripheral arterial disease fall outside our remit and will not be considered.

Purpose

Translational Research Projects are designed to advance current practice or enable innovative discoveries to be transferred into practical tools to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease.

We accept proposals focusing on one of two gaps in the translational pathway:

First translational gap “Proof of Concept”: preclinical studies that drive the outcomes of discovery research towards studies in humans. These often follow-on from a basic research project, this does not have to have been funded by Heart Research UK.

These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Validation of novel targets and pathways;
  • New therapeutic hit identification or development;
  • Diagnostics development;
  • Disease aetiology.

Second translational gap “Evidence to Practice”: here we wish to support patient-focused research that has a direct and immediate benefit on patient care. These can include but are not limited to:

  • Strategies for primary and secondary prevention;
  • Feasibility studies;
  • Prehabilitation;
  • Rehabilitation.

Translational research is a dynamic and evolving non-linear process to continually improve healthcare and should not stop once the technology is at the patient’s bedside. It can be thought of as taking a scientific breakthrough from ‘laboratory bench to hospital bedside and back’ to be further improved.

How Applications are chosen

We are a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and as such we follow the AMRC’s high standard and recommended principles of expert review to ensure that we fund only the best research projects in universities and hospitals.

  1. All applications will be subject to an initial review of eligibility against the scope of the grant call and our research strategy. Applications which do not meet these conditions will be rejected at this stage.
  2. All grant applications are assessed through our expert review process which includes carefully selected external reviewers. We aim to receive three external reviews for each application.
  3. In addition, reviews are submitted by up to three members of the HRUK TRP Medical Review Panel (membership is shown below), as well as our Research Advisory Group which is made up of people with lived experience who are part of our Patient and Public Network.
  4. Following expert review, the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Medical Review Panel conduct a further triage to shortlist the applications to take to the panel meeting. The shortlisted applications are discussed and scored, and the highest funding applications are awarded.
  5. All applicants who present to the Medical Review Panel are notified of the outcome of their application shortly after the meeting. We also share written comments from the external reviewers.

In 2025, we received 11 TRP applications and awarded three projects.
