Comparing fluids for preservation of donor hearts
Surgery,
Clinical trial
For a heart transplant to occur, a donor heart has to be acquired. When a donor heart is retrieved, it is flushed with a fluid in order to preserve it during transport.
Two different fluids are currently used; however, it is not known whether one is better than the other.
Better preservation of the heart may reduce ‘primary graft dysfunction’ (PGD) where the heart fails within the first 24 hours.
This project will explore the feasibility of a clinical trial by testing whether enough patients can be recruited in order to effectively investigate the difference between the two preservative fluids.
