Pacemakers are implanted to help the heart beat in the correct rhythm. The term “pacing” refers to the fact that pacemakers are programmed to let the heart beat at a pre-determined rate.
Since early strategies of pacing, there have been a number of advancements that increase heart function, decrease symptoms, and improve quality of life.
Despite these benefits, thousands of patients with older style pacemakers are not upgraded to modern pacing, with pacemakers simply being replaced like-for-like at the end of their life.
This study aims to establish whether upgrading these existing pacemakers improves quality of life for these patients, which would potentially change how pacemakers are replaced at the end of their lives.
