Immi's story

Imogen is a devoted supporter, sharing her mother’s story to raise awareness of aortic dissection.

In October 2010, my mum, aged 58, suffered an aortic dissection. She had been practising her calligraphy in the lounge when she ‘felt a bit funny’ and went into the kitchen to speak to my dad. He then called an ambulance, and because they lived in a remote village in Herefordshire, an air ambulance was deployed. She was flown to hospital, but tragically, she was pronounced dead on arrival.

My poor dad was driven to the hospital by our neighbour, following behind the ambulance. Then he had to break the devastating news to my mum’s parents, as well as to my brother and me.

We tried to pick up our lives as best we could, she was the heart of our family. Since then, my brother, our children, and I have all had to be screened for any signs of weakness in the heart or aorta.

My mum had a heart murmur as a child and was monitored regularly for it, but after having me and my brother, the check-ups stopped. I wish they never had.
