Perfect Brown Rice

Brown rice contains 1-2 grams more fibre per portion than its white counterpart, so it should be the go-to rice for anyone wanting to eat a diet rich in fibre, which is supportive of our heart health. However, cooking it on the hob isn’t enjoyable or easy! Here we share two alternative, hassle-free ways to cook brown rice which will make the switch from white rice much easier.

Method

  1. Cooking in slow cooker:
  2. Add a small splash of olive oil to your slow cooker and use your fingers to run it around the dish, coating the inside.
  3. Thoroughly rinse the rice until the water runs clear.
  4. Add the rice, water and 1 tbsp olive oil to the slow cooker and cook on high for 3 hours, stirring occasionally until the rice is cooked through and fluffy.
  5. Cooking in pressure cooker (like an Instant Pot):
  6. Thoroughly rinse the rice until the water runs clear.
  7. Add the rice and water to the pressure cooker and cook on high for 20 minutes (if you’re using an electric pressure cooker that has a slow cooker function too make sure you set the valve to ‘sealing’ when pressure cooking).
  8. Let the pressure release naturally, this will take about 20 minutes. Remove lid, fluff the rice and serve.

    Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil, plus a splash extra

  • 750 ml water (or 3 cups)
