Everyone at Heart Research UK is deeply saddened by the death of our founder, Mr David Watson.
Our thoughts are with David’s family, friends, former colleagues, and the countless people whose lives he touched throughout an extraordinary career dedicated to saving and improving the lives of others.
David was a pioneering heart surgeon, an innovator, and the driving force behind the creation of Heart Research UK. But to those who knew him, he was so much more than his achievements. He was a man of immense compassion, determination and vision, who never accepted that the status quo was good enough when lives were at stake.
In 1967, following the death of a young patient following heart surgery, David founded the National Heart Research Fund, which would go on to become Heart Research UK. He was determined that other families should be spared the heartbreak he had witnessed and that more research was needed to make heart surgery safer and more effective. What began as a bold idea grew into a charity that has funded life-saving research, supported pioneering innovations and helped improve heart health for people across the UK and beyond.
David’s contribution to cardiovascular medicine was remarkable. During a period when heart surgery was still developing and outcomes were far less certain than they are today, he helped drive forward new approaches and technologies that transformed patient care. Among his most significant achievements was the development of a pioneering tissue heart valve at Killingbeck Hospital in Leeds during the 1970s. The valve went on to be used around the world for more than three decades and helped establish the foundations of modern heart valve surgery. Thousands of patients benefited directly from innovations such as these, and countless more continue to do so today. His work played a part in changing heart surgery from a high-risk procedure into the life-saving treatment that many now take for granted.
David was also instrumental in supporting some of the most important advances in British cardiac medicine. Through the charity he founded, he helped create the UK’s first hospital-based cardiac research unit and supported pioneering work that contributed to the success of some of the country’s earliest heart transplants. Most recently, David’s influence continued with him being the driving force behind our British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) and Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) fellowships. These achievements have left a lasting mark on cardiovascular care and continue to benefit patients today.
For nearly six decades, Heart Research UK remained at the heart of David’s life. As founder and honorary President, he continued to champion our mission and inspire everyone connected with the charity. His passion for improving heart health never diminished, and neither did his belief that research has the power to change lives.
Today, many thousands of people are living longer, healthier lives because of progress that David inspired. His legacy can be found in every breakthrough, every innovation and every life saved through safer cardiovascular research.
We are incredibly proud to have known David, to have worked alongside him, and to continue the mission that meant so much to him.
While we mourn his death, we also celebrate a life of extraordinary service and achievement. David’s vision transformed heart health in the UK and beyond, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
We will miss him greatly.
