The aorta is the largest artery in the body and carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
An aortic dissection occurs when there is a tear in the wall of the artery. This can be life-threatening but are often missed or diagnosed too late. A substance that can be detected in the blood, called desmosine, could be used to test whether a dissection has already occurred or is about to.
This project aims to shorten the process of testing for desmosine so that it may be used in emergency settings. Faster diagnosis means more people will receive the life-saving care that they need.
