In some patients who have had a stroke, an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of blood clots forming and second strokes.
As a result, people who have had a stroke undergo heart monitoring in the days after, and if AF is detected, they are given drugs known as anticoagulants to prevent blood clots.
This project aims to develop a risk score for how likely a person to develop AF, to reduce unnecessary testing but also improve detection of AF through more rigorous testing in those who need it. This will improve AF diagnosis and treatment therefore and reduce rate of recurrent stroke.
